The Rabbit Hole is a 2-acre block just past the town edge of Upper Hutt. The block comprises “a bit of bush, a bit of garden, a bit of paddock and a bit of river” – and endless opportunities. As we work towards reducing our impact on the earth, using permaculture principles and all the common sense we can find – we dream of sharing our learnings with those who wish to take better care of their planet, their communities and themselves. We dream of sharing our place with those whose journey meets ours. We dream of fresh, healthy, abundant food and hearing bird song, laughter, music and wind.
It is when you choose to seek that you can find answers.
And it is only when you fall down the rabbit hole that you will discover wonderland.

How I went from burnt out, corporate career and contributing to the problem to living a lifestyle of health, sustainability and happiness (as cheesy as it sounds).
Living life in a more sustainable way is hard, right? It takes too much time (you don't have). You pay more money (you also don't have).
Sounds familiar? What if the opposite was true? What if you could live a life that is happy, fulfilled, healthy, connected AND sustainable? And spend LESS money? Spend LESS time? |
Contrary to what you may believe, this is entirely possible. And not hard to implement - it just takes time to hone in on the best approach and sort out your systems.
My name is Natalie from the Rabbithole.
I've spent the last 10 years learning and experimenting with the best ways to make sustainable living simple, fun and practical. How to make it a way of life, not a chore. And I love to share what I have learned so that you don't have to spend the same amount of time learning how to make a difference to your life and that of your children.
When I left my career in law behind upon moving to New Zealand in 2001, I was experiencing many of the symptoms of burn out and exhaustion. I was asking myself if this really was what life is about - pressure and competition.
I was over it all and came here, hoping to reconnect with nature and find some calm. However, after the first 'holiday' feel wore off and I settled, re-entering the corporate world, I found the same patterns of stress and overwhelm developing here.
I've been passionate about the environment ever since seeing a TV clip of white seal babies being murdered for their fur when I was about 6 years old. I studied law to make a difference through environmental law and policy. But it wasn't until my own children were born that I moved away from activism and started looking at my own life.
I researched and learned, started growing our own food, eliminating toxins from our home. And as we simplified our lives, I finally found the answers to my questions of 'what is life about'? I found connection with people around me. I felt better and more alive. Less stressed. We spent less money and ate better food. We had more free time to spend with our kids. The struggle ended.
In 2010 we moved here to the Rabbithole, a 2-acre property in Upper Hutt, New Zealand. From here, we grew in so many ways - through our gardens, the nature surrounding us and the people we bring together. At the Rabbithole, we're committed to provide a space to linger, to learn and to question for anyone with a desire to make the world a better place.
I've been running sustainability workshops for over 8 years now, helping hundreds of people make changes in their life by providing information that
- is tried, tested and practical
- gives you a deep understanding of both the problem and the solution.
But information is only the first step. To make real change, it takes more than that. So I will coach you to make sure it takes hold in your life, so that you develop momentum and your sustainability journey becomes bigger and bolder every day, rather than withering away.
And at last, I won't leave you on your own. You can stay connected with us through our events, our online community, our music or just book your stay, immerse yourself and re-energize.
